The Harder They Come (1972)

This is a brilliant introduction for anyone who thinks Jamaican music begins and ends with Bob Marley. From the ska of Desmond Dekkers "Shanty Town" and The Maytals "Pressure Drop" (later covered by The Clash) to the more soulful efforts of the magnificent Jimmy Cliff (his three most classic tunes are included here) The Slickers add to this classic album with "Johnny Too Bad" There isn't a dud track on offer. Each song is a classic. No doubt about it, ALL reggae fans should own this! Possibly the finest reggae album of all time. Highly recommended.

If you haven't seen the movie "The Harder They Come", go find it and watch it. After you do, you'll want to hear these tunes again and again. The movie brought Jamaican music to the forefront, and Jimmy Cliff proves himself to be a great actor as well as singer. The backstory is that the Director had about 2 days to put together a soundtrack and mix it into the movie to augment the title tune, and he simply chose the best reggae/ska tunes currently in rotation in Jamaica that week. And boy, he picked a superb collection. A great record and a great movie.
