After playing tenor sax in big bands for most of his career, Ben Webster became a jazz nomad traveling the country playing with pickup groups in small clubs and local jazz venues when the big band era ended. His big, breathy sound was instantly recognizable, and he was a popular attraction. More popular in Europe (where many American jazz musicians were held in high esteem) than the US, he relocated to Copenhagen in 1964 and eventually died in Amsterdam in 1973. But before moving there, he shared an apartment in NYC in the early '60's with Joe Zawinul, the Austrian born pianist who anchored the Cannonball Adderley Quintet and eventually played with Miles Davis, co-founded Weather Report and formed the group, The Zawinul Syndicate. While early in his career he briefly play in the Maynard Fergusson big band and tour with Dinah Washington, his trajectory was the complete opposite of Webster's. But for two brief sessions, these two housemates went into the studio for two afternoons in September and October 1963 to record these tunes together. With assistance from Sam Jones, Philly Jo Jones and Thad Jones on one day and Benny Carter and Richard Davis on the other, they recorded one of the most listenable and mutually creative albums of it's day. A must have!
