Randy Breaks Through
Randy Newman was a songwriter for everyone but himself before he recorded this album. (There are one or two albums on ACE that showcase the songs he wrote as recorded by others.) He was the best unknown songwriter there was, and when he finally recorded his own album of songs, his prowess came to light. Though the record was never a huge seller, the quality of the songs is absolutely amazing. Love Story, Living Without You, and I Think It's Going to Rain Today (a huge seller for Judy Collins) are three examples on this album. Newman has gone on to make some incredible records over the years, and his songs have been covered by everyone but never done as uniquely as he does. He also has been an incredibly prolific writer for the movies, and if you do your homework, you'll find that he has written the scores to some of your favorite movies. But it's this record that finally began his own career as a performer.
