This is the album where Robyn Hitchcock became less the comedian he had almost often been (like in his 'Man With The Light Bulb Head' days) to more of the surrealist he would fully become. There were always "elements" of his surrealist proclivities in his more whimsical early work (such as 'My Wife And My Dead Wife") but this was where it became more concentrated and more haunting. Though only a two-minute song, easily this album's most beautiful track is "A Raymond Chandler Evening" and once it's over, one is left with the feeling that they have just read The Long Goodbye or The Big Sleep or perhaps both. Even the more obviously funny songs have a more critical feel to them like the three weightlifters who are perhaps a bit too fond of their physiques. For anyone caught off-guard in 1988 when the brilliant A&M debut "Globe Of Frogs" was released, this 1986 album will explain how this artist got to there from where he had been before.
