John Coltrane — Coltrane's Sound: Reviews
Leftover Atlantic Tracks
These Coltrane tracks were left in the can when Coltrane departed for more lucrative pastures, and they were not released until long after he began recording for another record company. But unlike leftovers that get released just because they're available and weren't used on other albums, this is a complete session with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Steve Davis and drummer Elvin Jones who were Coltrane's working band. While not uniformly excellent, they are a strong addition to the Coltrane legacy and are worth adding to your collection. Recorded at about the same time as the session that produced My Favorite Things, a track among the most radio played jazz tracks in history, this session is one that deserved to be released, even if it was far after the fact.
