Essential Leo Kottke
If you only get one Leo Kottke album,
and I think he belongs in any collection,
this is the one to get.
Simply the best guitar-driven folk and bluegrass I've heard for the extraordinary voices he gets out of his instruments - a jews harp? - and the seamless ease of his technique.
His deep and slightly rough vocals blend nicely with the smoothness of his twelve-string as on Louise and Tiny Island,
but Cradle to the Grave is my favorite cut here - a perfect mix in all ways.
Kottke never tries to overwhelm the song with fancy fretwork,
he keeps it honest and true and that's somewhat rare with exceptionally skilled guitarists.
If you've never heard In Christ There Is No East or West played on guitar,
you might find Kottke's interpretation both beautiful and Old-time Church inspiring.
I bought this in vinyl when it first hit the market so I've heard it hundreds of times.
I burned it here at 320kps and it's never sounded better.
