Joan Sings Sweet Soul

28.09.2021 by david (See all user reviews)

One of the most under appreciated recording artists is Joan Osborne, and this is one her best albums. Best know for her blow out the lights version of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, this album has her interpreting other soul classics with great results. Leading off with the Spinners' classic, I'll Be Around, Joan takes this familiar song and interprets it as a beat laden soul ballad with hooks that will stick with you for a long time. She does the same with some other soul classics like Stevie Wonder's Loves In Need of Love Today and Timmy Thomas' Why Can't We Live Together. Sometimes the beat doesn't work, like in her version of Smiling Faces Sometimes and a misguided version of The Weight, but otherwise this is a great collection of familiar songs dramatically reinterpreted.
