Grant Green — Plays The R&B Hits: Reviews
Green Gets Funky
Grant Green started out as a fairly traditional guitar player, and his early records (many in an organ combo) are classic examples of great "club" jazz. Eventually he moved onto funk in an effort to break out of the classic jazz mold, and while he was occasionally successful, he often meandered through cover tunes without any real inspiration. And that often shows in this collection. If you're looking for great Green, you'll be far better served if you check out "Idle Moments", "Born to Be Blue" and "Green Street". Green recorded prolifically, and there many album choices for you to pick from. This one wouldn't be my first choice.
