Herbie and Joni - Terrific
Though Joni Mitchell is only slightly featured as a singer on this CD, it is her compositions that make up the tunes on this album (and on CD 2). With additional help from a diverse group of singers (think Leonard Cohen to Tina Turner) and straight instrumentals, Joni's songs take on a different feel and often reflect a varied light. Nothing feels forced here (as some collaborations do). Instead of butting heads, the variety of interpretations adds to the overall quality of her songs. Hancock is the glue that holds everything together, and his arrangement and playing represent some of his most interesting work.
