James Brown — Live At The Apollo, Vol. II (Deluxe Edition) (CD1): Reviews
Then There Was Vol.ll
James Brown Live at the Apollo (1963) was a pretty amazing record. Brown paid to have it recorded and released, and radio stations took to playing it in it's entirely late at night. It was the record that really brought him into the broad public eye. He recorded a number of other live albums afterwards (Pure Dynamite -Live At the Royal in 1964, Live at the Garden in 1967), but this record, recorded a number of years later in 1968 is THE true classic. While the recording isn't top notch, the performance is. The band cooks on some classics, and the version of There Was A Time was the party dance record for years. So, while there are a lot of live JB albums out there (including an Apollo Vol.3 and a bunch of others from the later years), this is the live JB album to own and enjoy over and over.
