Sam Cooke — Live At The Harlem Square Club: Reviews
The Real Sam Cooke
There are two official "live" Sam Cooke recordings. There's this one recorded live at The Harlem Square Club and the one recorded live at Copacabana in NYC. The difference between the two is somewhat startling until you understand the circumstances. Recorded at an matinee performance in a relatively small Black nightclub, this record with King Curtis leading the band, is a revelation. It's soulful and moving while the Copa record with the Copa house orchestra is a study in supper club cool. The results show that the Harlem Square Club recording is Sam Cooke as he was meant to be heard.
