Another Live Coltrane
One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note is another live Coltrane album in the seemingly endless parade of resurrected Coltrane performances from his storied career. What makes this one a worthy addition is that it's McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones as his partners in crime. Coltrane often traveled with the first two, but the drumming duties were often split between Roy Haynes and Elvin Jones. The difference between their two styles was alway evident in that Elvin Jones was a driver of the rhythm while Roy Haynes was more of a timekeeper. Both added tremendous value to his repertoire, and this set is no exception. Three of the pieces check in at more that 19 minutes each, and they really show a band at work and in sync. I took away a star because the recording is a bit muddy - it was a radio broadcast and was never intended to be released as a recording so the recording is not super high quality. That being considered, it still is a great period piece of Coltrane.
