Tim Booth — Love Life: Reviews

1 5

A Masterclass

11.03.2016 by Tom Howard (See all user reviews)

James were always an excellent art-pop band, with an uncanny knack for both melody and killer hooks. Front man Tim Booth has returned with a third solo album. This collection concerning the break up of a marriage, a heavyweight topic if ever there was yet he's managed to retain the tunes and never loses sight of the influences and stimuli that made James so interesting. It begins very well with "As Far As I Can See" which appears primed to topple into Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World", though thankfully it doesn't and "Buried Alive" is a great song underpinned by a brilliant string-powered arrangement. "Bless `Em All" builds up to the sort of peak that gets found on Elbow records, and "Monsters" begins quite unadorned before converting effortlessly into an epic pop song. "All About Time" provides another stand out four minutes, though it's attracted comparisons to Iggy's "Lust For Life". Behind all these splendid songs are some serious sentiments, but nonetheless it's an uplifting collection and has made itself extremely comfortable in my ipod. Highly recommended. Buy it now!
