James Brown — Plays Nothing But Soul: Reviews
Lots of Solos
This James Brown album is interesting because the band members spend a lot of effort soloing over endless vamps. It's a great workout for the band, but it doesn't really qualify as great soul jazz. There's too much vamping and no great arrangements for the band when they're not playing individual solos. But it is interesting if somewhat repetitious, and every now and then there's something that makes your ears perk up just a bit. But overall, JB wasn't a real jazz player, and his band had talent that he never quite took advantage of during their instrumental sessions. So yes, this isn't bad, but it's not what the James Brown Band sounded like in concert or on some of his great tracks from this era.
