Bobby Hutcherson — Dialogue: Reviews

Spellbinding Blue Note LP from 1965

12.01.2017 by sasha shostakovich (See all user reviews)

If you've never checked out the vibraphone master Bobby Hutcherson on Blue Note before this present album 'Dialogue' would be a great place to start. Coming in the midst of a period of great upheaval in the world of jazz this session manages to be both traditional and experimental at the same time. Perhaps only Bobby's appearance on Andrew Hill's 'Judgement' album comes close to capturing the feelings and moods exhibited here on 'Dialogue'. In fact Andrew Hill's presence as both featured composer and pianist on 'Dialogue' is a big reason why this present session is so successful. In some ways any number of participants on this album could be called the leader. Freddie Hubbard and Sam Rivers on the front line (trumpet and reeds) provide compelling moments of solo expertise. But in many respects it is the group effort that makes this such an amazing album. Solo and accompanying lines interweave in such a way that collective improvisation is the only accurate way to describe the nature of much of this music. Never again (with the possible exception of parts of the Blue Note 'Components' album) did Bobby Hutcherson come close to this perfect balance of traditional and avant garde jazz. It represents the very best in Blue Note jazz (a New York based independent record company that from the 1940's on was responsible for recording most of the greats of jazz) . In all respects an absolute must-hear session. Don't hesitate for a moment. Download it now!!
