Αναπτυχθηκαν κυριως τον 9ο και 10ο αιωνα και ο θρυλος λεει οτι πηραν τ ονομα τους απο τον Παπα Γρηγοριο τον Μεγαλο,αλλοι μελετητες αλλα πιστευουν,αλλα ας μη μεινουμε εκει. Παραδοσιακα αυτα τα κομματια τα τραγουδουσαν χορωδιες ανδρων και αγοριων στις εκκλησιες,η, ανδρων και γυναικων στα παρεκκλησια.Σαυτο το αλμπουμ που κυκλοφορησε 27/8/2013,οι Vitam Venturi,γνωστοι ως Cantus Firmus,Grgorian Mystic Project,Gregorian Music Orchestra,συνθετες και εκτελεστες,πηραν τα κατα τη γνωμη τους ωραιοτερα Γρηγοριανα κομματια,οπως εχουν κανει πολλες φορες(διοτι ειδικευονται στη μουσικη αυτη)και δημιουργησαν ενα πολυ καλο αλμπουμ με δυο cds σε μουσικη Ambient,New age,ακομα και συμφωνικη ροκ.
