Joe Zawinul — Zawinul: Reviews
The Key to So Much Great Jazz
This is the first Joe Zawinul album on Atlantic, and there is so much in it to love that it's overwhelming. Many people refer to this as the first Weather Report album, and in spirit it definitely is. But just as Zawinul was a critical part of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet and soul jazz (Mercy, Mercy, Mercy), he was instrumental in moving Miles Davis forward spiritually with "In A Silent Way", a tune that makes it's debut on this record. Add the Zawinul Syndicate and some great standard jazz recordings with Ben Webster (his one time roommate), and you have a man who influenced so many other players that his impact on American jazz is immeasurable.
