O George Gershwin,Aμερικανος συνθετης,εγραψε αυτη τη συνθεση το 1924 για σολο πιανο και μπαντα τζαζ,που συνδυαζει στοιχεια της κλασικης μουσικης με επιρροες τζαζ.Αυτη η ραψωδια πρωτοπαιχτηκε σε μια συναυλια στο Aeolian Hall στη Νεα Υορκη στις 12 Φεβρουαριου του 1924 απο τον Whiteman και την μπαντα του,με τον ιδιο τον Γκερσουιν να παιζει πιανο.Ολοι ειπαν,οτι αυτο το εργο καθιερωσε τον George Gershwin σαν ενα σοβαρο συνθετη,και ειναι μαλλον το δημοφιλεστερο, απ ολα τα συναυλιακα εργα του.Μεχρι το τελος του 1927, σε τρισημισυ χρονια δηλαδη,η μπαντα Whiteman ειχε παιξει το εργο αυτο 84 φορες και η ηχογραφηση ειχε πουλησει 1.000.000 αντιτυπα.
