Gene Ammons — Blue Gene: Reviews
The Final Prestige Jam Session
This was Ammons' final Prestige jam session record, and it showcases another group of terrific soloists. Two drummers, Art Taylor and Ray Barretto drive the beat and give terrific support to an all-star group. Mal Waldron (piano) is the writer for all the tunes, and he gives the players some great melodies to interpret. There are three blues tunes, but given the ensemble, they're straight ahead jams with blues overtones. And as I've said before, it's 1957/58, so the session is in mono. It doesn't bother me, and it shouldn't bother you!
