Deacon Blue — A New House: Reviews
Great album....
I have to admit to a bit of bias here. Basically Deacon Blue/Ricky Ross can do no wrong in my opinion so I am reviewing this album through rose tinted headphones, if you get my drift. Having said that, if I didn't think this release was up to snuff I would have knocked a star or two off, so even being as objective as I can, I still love this album hence the 5 stars.
What I like about the more recent albums and this one in particular is that Deacon Blue have maintained their distinctive style, the eclectic harmonies provided by Lorraine McIntosh, the perceptive lyrics of Mr Ross, the jangly rhythms, the instantly memorable melodies, they even incorprporate strings on tracks such as An Ocean with a rare pazzazz, but they sound bang up to date as they once again demonstrate that fashion is temporary, class is permanent. I also have to say that Ricky Ross is in excellent voice, maturity obviously suits him, the production is razor sharp and quite frankly, any album that has a song about John Muir, a particular hero of mine, on it was always going to get five stars! Nevertheless we have such an enjoyable upbeat listening experience here that I cannot recommend it highly enough. For me Deacon Blue are teaching the young whipper snappers out there a bit of a lesson. More power to their elbow. Highly recommended. Give them a listen.
