Brilliant Pop
I do love a bit of quirky synth pop and The Dø do do it well. `D' (for Dan Levy)
and `O' (for Olivia Merilahti) are a talented duo who make an exuberant noise.
They've got a light touch with the kind of jolly tune which lodges in your head
like a barnacle stuck to the bottom of a boat and make it all sound so easy.
"Trustful Hands" for instance; a simple chugging electric guitar and a crisp
snare and hi-hat frame the vocal performance from Ms O and a chorus
whose well-structured harmonies lend themselves to a good old singalong and
"Anita No!" which is just as infectious with its playfully alliterative way with words.
"Sparks" is a somewhat darker affair with its contorted Giorgio Moroder-esque rumbling synth ostinato; the spirit of ABBA seems to be peeping around the corner at us on "Lick My Wounds" and the final track "Omen" gets the full Phantom Of The Opera treatment with its dark organ chords, crashing martial percussion and Ms O's fragmented incantation.
There are twelve numbers in the set and I truly did find myself loving them all.
