Simple Minds — Sparkle In The Rain (Remastered 2015): Reviews
Sparkle In The Scene
From about 1981 to 1985, there were many UK and Irish bands seeming to all have the same sort of almost 'holy' sound which to me were characterised by grand, sweeping orchestral interludes and a crusade-like beauty and importance in all of the song arrangements. Obviously, one band in particular eventually grabbed the 'throne' of this movement and would be much, much more singularaly remembered than all the others, somehow even still regarded by some to be the most important band to this very day. I'm referring to U2 but I believe that not only do they deserve almost none of this praise, I think that their usurpation was a carefully concocted corporate coup and that the actual best band of this era, SIMPLE MINDS, were for all intensive purposes murdered in said coup (not literally of course!). This album to me is their very best. Compare it to any U2 album and even with the unfair advantage of Eno/Lanois contributions to the former's many works, SPARKLE IN THE RAIN blows them away. Anyone who doubts this should listen to the track, EAST AT EASTER!
