John Coltrane, Ray Draper — The Ray Draper Quintet Featuring John Coltrane: Reviews
A Daring Leap for a 17 Year Old
Ray Draper was only 17 when he recorded this album, and he was able to recruit John Coltrane to join him in this endeavor. It's a very straight ahead late '50's session, but Draper's arrangements, while fairly standard, give the players some wiggle room. There's nothing revelatory about Coltrane's solos, and the players, including pianist Gil Coggins, bassist Spanky DeBrest, and drummer Larry Ritchie are competent but not especially exciting. The attempt by Draper to make the Tuba into a jazz instrument and ingratiate it into the mainstream lasted about 4 albums or so, and he never was successful. One of his other albums (not available yet on this site) is Tuba Sounds, and it has Jackie McLean, Mal Waldron and Webster Young as (all very early in their successful careers) as very strong energetic supporting players. Look for it!
