Το συγκρότημα γεννήθηκε από μια ιδέα του Τουόμας Χολοπάινεν, μετά από ένα βράδυ που πέρασε με φίλους γύρω από μια φωτιά στην εξοχή. Στην αρχική σύνθεση, εκτός από τον Χολοπάινεν, συμμετείχε ο Έμπου Βουόρινεν, τον οποίο ο Χολοπάινεν μόλις είχε γνωρίσει, και η Τάρια Τούρουνεν, συμμαθήτρια του Χολοπάινεν στην διάσημη μουσική Ακαδημία Σιμπέλιους, όπου και είχε ξεχωρίσει για το ταλέντο της.
Λίγο πριν την ηχογράφηση του πρώτου τους album, "Angels Fall First", προστέθηκε στο συγκρότημα ο ντράμερ Γιούκα Νεβαλάινεν. Τον Μάιο του 1997, υπέγραψαν με την Spinefarm Records για δύο albums, ωστόσο λίγο αργότερα η εταιρεία ανανέωσε το συμβόλαιό τους για τρία albums.
