Chuck Berry — Chuck Berry In London: Reviews
Chuck's London Studio Recordings
Chess records thought it would be fashionable to have some of their artists record in London (this was during the time of the "British Invasion"), and Chuck Berry was no exception. None of the Chess/Checker "London" albums have much to recommend, and this one is no exception. Jimmy Johnson is sorely missed on keyboards, and while there are a few interesting songs on this collection, nothing here will ever be included on a Best of Berry collection. The performances are fairly perfunctory and uninspired - there's even a rendition of Jamaica Farewell that sounds like a first take and no rehearsal. And Dear Dad cops it's licks from many other Berry tunes. Overall, if you're a Chuck Berry completist, you probably want this in your collection, though it won't be a set you keep going back to.
