Relaxingly Mature
Van Morrison's 23rd Studio album from 1995 is a maturing work, with Van showing signs of mellowing, even if some of the old crabbiness occasionally rears its head in tracks such as "No Religion", "Underlying Depression" and "Melancholia". Recorded when Van was 50 this is largely the sound of a man approaching a sort of contented middle age with just a few issues to resolve - despite mild bad language in opener "Perfect Fit" and track 3 "Raincheck". There are a couple of duets with daughter Shana and Irish vocalist Brian Kennedy also provides backup vocals throughout. Horns feature prominently on the album with some great arrangements by Pee Wee Ellis. It's a relaxing album, perhaps missing some of the fire that made Van's early albums such classics, but a fine work nonetheless. A great album to relax to.
