Chuck Berry — Back Home: Reviews
One of the Best Berry Albums
Maybe his voice is double tracked on Tulane, but otherwise this is an excellent effort by Berry later on in his Chess recording career. The backup musicians are inspired, and while Berry was never very creative in his writing, there are some good songs here. Tulane, I'm A Rocker, and Gun are very good Berry, and "Christmas" should be added to your holiday playlist. I'm not sure who's playing harmonica on this set, but their presence would have been welcome on many other Berry's recordings. They fill out his guitar licks nicely, and overall it's a pleasant 1/2 hour of Berry with songs that are not on any of his greatest hits compilations. Not First Class Berry, but it's good enough for repeated listening.
