Julius Eastman — Unjust Malaise (CD2): Reviews
Highly recommended
"The Holy Presence of Joan D'Arc" is a piece composed by Julius Eastman for ten cellos in 1980. "Gay Guerrilla" has been composed in 1979 without specification of instruments and "Evil Nigger" has been composed in 1979, without specification of instruments for the execution too. Among the most important and provocative pieces written by the composer, "Gay Guerrilla" and "Evil Nigger" have been recorded at Northwestern University on January 16 1980 in an execution for four pianos. If one has to bring an example of what music Eastman promoted, this album is surely the most important document: minimal method is crossed by executions of a high complexity that reinvent the pieces and bring out the inner rebellion instance of the author. Highly recommended.
