Van Gets Inspired by the Chieftains
It's hard to get any Van Morrison fans to agree on what is the best album in his vast repertoire, but to my mind, this one has to be in the top three. The interplay between the Chieftains and Morrison is seamless, and the beauty of every song is enhanced by their common love of traditional Irish folk music. Simply but elegant arrangements make this collaboration a true gem, and while Morrison's voice can sometimes be too dominant in his other recordings, on this disc it simply sounds like another instrument in Paddy Maloney's arsenal of beautiful sounds. This is as good as Morrison has ever sounded. The only other track he recorded with the Chieftains, "Shenandoah" is worth tracking down on Morrison's "Greatest Hits, Vol.3."
