Lloyd Cole, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions — Easy Pieces: Reviews
Nothing Easy About Following 'Rattlesnakes'
1985's "Easy Pieces" was a highly anticipated album as it was the somewhat long-awaited follow up to Lloyd Cole & The Commotions' brilliant debut, "Rattlesnakes.' Though initially received as a small disappointment but overall enjoyable album, several tracks have proven over time to stand out as equal to any of 'Rattlesnakes' most memorable ones. "Cut Me Down,' easily the most 'Rattlesnake'-esque track on "Easy Pieces,' provides a more sarcastic departure for the then still relatively young Cole but whilst retaining the positive pop vibration of even the most exuberant 'Rattlenakes' track, "Perfect Skin." It also contains the most memorable line on either album... "I've been bought and sold and hung upside down, cut me down." As in 'Rattlesnakes' and every release after, Lloyd Cole has always managed to slip in film title references possibly indictating to me that he was perhaps either a film buff, film student or both. The title "Easy Pieces" seems to be derived from the Bob Rafelson film from the 1970's, "Five Easy Pieces" starring Jack Nicholson. This is a great album and is far less well-known than any other Lloyd Cole release either with or sans The Commotions.
